Trying out Google Reader

Archived in the category: Uncategorized
Posted by: Sara -

Yesterday, I was looking at the incoming referrers for one of my sites and saw the link: http://www.google.com/reader/view

Naturally, I went to check it out. Apparently Google has it’s own Reader so I figured I’d give it a shot. I know in a previous post I mentioned that I don’t use an RSS Reader because if the blog is THAT good, I will remember it. Well, in my old age and chaos that is my mind, I’m forgetting everything..I mean everything. So, I’m going to give it a shot now!

Anyone else used it?

I messed with it once, but don’t remember a whole lot about it…..

I use the Sage extension in FF and it works pretty well…..

I gave it a shot when it first came out, and promptly never used it again. Too lightweight for my needs, but then again I read about 100 feeds a day.

RssBandit is a great (and very lean) OSS C# WinForms reader, but I swear by Omea Reader (which is very resource hungry but chock full of power user features). Both are free. If you want to shell out a couple of bucks, Feed Demon (http://www.newsgator.com/NGOLProduct.aspx?ProdId=FeedDemon) is probably the best desktop aggregator (written in C++ and extremely fast and lean).

IIRC Google Reader doesn’t support CommentRSS or CommentAPI, which means lotsa clicking around to get (or post) blog comments. The 3 products I mentioned do, so theoretically you don’t even have to leave the aggregator (though I still like to visit the actual website’s of my favorite bloggers).

I used it for a while and liked it enough, but then I forgot about it. When you cant even remember to use the program that is supposed to help you keep track of the blogs you’d normally forget about, you know you’ve got a problem.

Sorry, but feedemon is slow as hell. It’s written in C#/.net btw.

Newzcrawler is super fast and clean.

Joris, no it’s written in C++…crack open the main .exe in a hex editor and it’ll be obvious. You’re probably thinking of SharpReader which A) is written in C# and B) is slow as hell and virtually useless.

FeedDemon is the fastest reader I’ve come across by far.

I just us Opera and it updates feeds whenever you want it to.

One in a while I have a good hard look at the feeds and anything I haven’t read in over a month gets deleted. Survival of the fittest…
