How I’m staying amused without the Internet

Archived in the category: Uncategorized

It has been 16 days (yes I’m counting!) without the Internet. My short jaunts to the local cafeteria just don’t count considering I am typically online 10+ hours a day. So how the hell have I been surviving?

I have been studying up on my French. I now know about 15 very unuseful phrases and am trying to learn more. Why couldn’t it at least be a phonetic language?

Most of my time has been spent playing my Nintendo DS. I’ve had this game called Brain Age for a while now but until I boarded the plane for Belgium, I never really had time to play it. Now, I’m a complete junkie. They have a “training” session which lets you do things like simple addition/subtraction/multiplication problems (I guess they figrue division is too hard),  reading aloud, word memorization, etc. Then it tests your brain. The best score is to have a brain the age of a 20 year old. Well my friends. Before I started playing this incredibly addictive game, my brain was as old as a 45-year old. Well, I am 30, so I demanded a brain of at least equal age. Now I have the brain of a 21-year old.

There is also a Sudoku game within brain age and I can’t get enough of it. I’ve joined the Sudoku craze and now want to buy the Sudoku game for the ds. I haven’t resorted to old-fashioned pen and paper, but that may be the next step!

The longest period i have ever had to work without an internet connetion was about 3 weeks, and that was more the enough. It can be really annoying if you need if for you work and it’s not there.

They where comming to install on the 4th of Sept, right? So only one more day to go ;-)

And i suppose that since you are in Belgium now, you are also slowely going to start learning Dutch :) You live in the southern part of Belgium that you are learning French and not Dutch? (People from Belgium won’t call it Dutch but Vlaams, it’s the pretty much the same language)

I don’t think I could survive that long without Internet access; honestly. I’ve noticed that my days online are far fewer than before but I still feel very dependent on the ability to quickly get caught up with the world and current events. Not to mention the geek item or two. :)

Tijmen — Yes, I am in the part that speaks French so right now, that is my priority. Just being able to ask simple questions to help me get around is my priority. Once I have French down, I will move onto Dutch!

Chris - It has definitely been hard. I like to get outside but it has been raining almost daily here since I arrived so that kind of puts a damper on outdoor activities. Supposed to be later today though!

Is it really hard to learn French? I tried a few months back but couldn’t get the hang of it.

“Un bière sil-vous-plait… Merci!” What more do you need to know? Oh right, cafe-au-lait, crepe, pain-au-chocolat… ;-)

Hi Sara

Thanks for your welcome on the sitepoint forums.

I’ve just recently sailed around part of the French Coast and Channel Islands from Enland and was really struggling without internet, and lack of power on board. Thankfully marinas are catching onto the Wi-Fi option. Guernsey even give it you for free!

So …. hurry up and get online already woman. It occurred to me a day or so ago that I’ve had nobody to annoy for a while now.
