Be Aware of Your Surroundings

Archived in the category: Uncategorized

Everyone who knows me, knows I am at home when I’m outside. I love hiking, exploring, climbing, just being outdoors and taking in my surroundings. In honor of Blog action day, I wanted to recommend people get outside and really get familiar with their surroundings.

I realize most people’s days require them to stay inside, but do you ever take notice of that park you drive by every day? Or that sprawling oak in your neighbors front yard that has been there for hundreds of years? When you drive into work today or home, take a chance to look around you and really look at the nature that surrounds you that you may not have noticed before. Take a break and instead of surfing the web, take a walk around the block and just pay attention to what you see. Just being aware of the life around you can make so much difference to how you treat it. If you appreciate the beauty you will be much less likely to do anything that could hurt it.

I challenge you to get outside this week and tell me what you saw. Go off the beaten track and walk a trail, bring your camera and take some pictures. You never know what you will see. I went hiking a couple of weeks ago and just 1/4 mile into the hike I was rewarded with this.

Since I started geocaching I’m a lot more outside. The perfect hobby to bring a geek back into nature :-)

The picture you posted looks great! Where is this? In Belgium or the US?

This was actually when I was in the US a couple of weeks ago. I will be out with my camera later this week!

At lunch today I went for a 15-mile bike ride.

What I saw was mostly paved road and city streets, but it is a beautiful day and it was good to be out.

This weekend I’ll ride through the country past freshly harvested fields. I’ll pass some old school houses, a lot of livestock and roll over an old bridge. If I get lost *just the right way* I’ll pass by a covered bridge (it’s pretty new, but still cool).

Hi Sara,

Your so right. I live in San Diego and hardly ever go outside during the day with an intention to enjoy the outdoors. It really ought to be a crime.

I spent so many years indoors thanks to MMORPGs, the Internet and coding that I sometimes forget how much fun it is just to get out and do something that doesn’t involve a screen.

Thanks for the wakeup call - I’ll go out to the beach this weekend and enjoy myself a little.

Thanks for your comment Jerad. I know what you mean about being glued to the screen. If you take your camera I’d love to see pictures. Have a great time at the beach!

Now that everyone has laptops and having mobile internet is affordable it is even possible to work while sitting in the park, at least for those who work at home.

You’re right Guilherme. Quite often I sit on my porch just so I can work outside. It all depends on where the sun is in the sky at that time of day though…the glare can be pretty bad!
