I Like Them Big

Size really does matter, at least when it comes to hard drives. One of my favorite sites to visit is Slickdeals.net. This site usually has all of the best deals and are typically tech-related. I was looking at it this morning and I saw a listing for a 500GB External Hard Drive for $100. Everywhere else it was $140 so that is a pretty good savings. Plus you can never have too many external hard drives lying around right? Well I didn’t act immediately, thankfully.

I continue to scroll through all of the latest deals and I see something else that catches my eye. It is bigger, shinier, sexier than the last one. This one was a Hitachi 1TB external drive going for the low price of $200! This made my knees get weak. How was I going to resist this? I have three of them right now and did I really need another one? My current ones are all in use but with one this size, I could easily combine them into 1. The temptation is killing me. I still want to purchase it but I haven’t yet! Just look at that thing. How can anyone NOT want it?

For some really weird reason, when I see a big hard drive, I get excited. When I see a big hard drive at an amazing price, it is very hard to resist my urges. Do you have anything that has the same effect on you?

Oh God, here I thought it was just me being me! For the last 3 months I’ve had to physically restrain myself during the weekends from going to the computer store streets and getting two 1 TB drives. I want these babies so bad… I have convinced myself I need them because I’m planning to re-rip my entire music collection in .flac, and aside also rip to mp3 (for my N800 music player) and ogg (for my desktops/laptops/250 GB WD passport drive (check those out, they are super-sexy and small).

So you see, I clearly NEED these two 1 TB drives. I have about 1 TB of useful storage on all my machines combined right now, and five spare hard drives lying around collecting dust because they’re too small (120-200 GB range).

And to think my first computer had two 360 K floppy drives…

Tell you what, let’s race. Whoever gives in first loses!

Thanks Sam! Thomas, if I see someone drooling over them at the Media Markt, I’ll introduce myself to you :D

Staples, after easy rebates, has the 500 meg external for $80.00 (and it may be only good through the weekend … I just glanced at the ad).

As for the 1 TB … I really, really, want one as well. And I can’t explain why. I don’t need it. I don’t suffer from mine-is-bigger-than-yours syndrome (at least I don’t think I do). I just want one.

(As for drives laying around unused. I’ve probably got 50 or more laying around my office in the 1 to 10 GB range. I can’t bring myself to toss them and every so often I’ll take one apart for the magnets.)

I agree with you about the big hard drives. I just think of all the movies and Final Cut clips and RAW photos I have filling up the drives I already have and think now is the time for the third set of backups.

Right now I am settling on 500 GB as the standard size for all these backup disks. I used to roll my own but find the Western Digital Book series more reliable and more attractive and not a lot more expensive than hand rolled cases and drives.
