What is the deal with airfare?

Archived in the category: Useless Info

Most people know that I am moving back to DC from Belgium in the coming months so I’ve been doing plenty of research. I am a researcher in general. Before the last car I bought, i compared and contrasted for about a year before I made a decision. I do this with most things. When it comes to the important things in life like where my kids will go to school, where we will live, what job I will have…using the word anal to describe me would be an understatement.

With the impending move, I started researching airfare. I will be traveling there by myself initially so I need a one-way ticket. A one-way ticket from Belgium to DC is $1200. A round trip ticket from Belgium to DC is $600. Hmmmm…which one do you think I’m going to buy?

I will be returning to Belgium at some point, but I will need a round-trip ticket then. I don’t understand why one way is twice as much as a round-trip ticket. Can anyone explain this logic to me?

I see the same thing getting the train across the U.K. It’s often cheaper to get a return ticket even if I’m only going one way.

I wonder if it’s an economies of scale thing? Very few people fly one way, so the airline’s business is built around return flights? Doesn’t seem right to penalise one-way travellers though.

Just buy the roundtrip and throw the second ticket away like everyone else who has been in this situation :). Airlines suck for doing this. One airline I’ve come across that doesn’t do this: Aer Lingus in Ireland. But I just wrote that so I can put “lingus” in your comments. There I did it again :)

Don’t even try and find reason in the airline industries, it will only hurt your head…

*sighs* Airfare is such a screwy thing. And then there’s all that new-fangled airport security, where they run you through x-rays, take your Swiss Army knife, make you buy THEIR water, steal your shoes…

Does Belgium have Greyhound?

Take the slow boat! ;)
Since no one (including the air companies) seems to actually understand their pricing, you’d think there’d be a competitive advantage to having actually logical pricing…

I definitely will be purchasing the round trip ticket; I just find it pretty stupid that it is such a difference. Maybe other people don’t do their research and say… oh ok.. $1200. SCORE!

If you take the quality companies like Brussels Airlines it will cost you a $1200 indeed. If you try the cheaper operators, like Condor from Germany, you might get a ticket for $400 or $500.
